Safer streets for all

We’re a group of residents in Levenshulme and Burnage who want to make our streets and public spaces more welcoming for walking, scooting, cycling and all forms of non-motorised travel.
We’re not ‘anti-car’. In fact, many of us drive on a regular basis and all of us benefit from having cars around.
But the number of private cars in Manchester has increased by 31% in the past decade. Our narrow, Victorian-era streets were never meant to host that kind of heavy traffic! The result is that Levenshulme and Burnage’s streets are gridlocked, unsafe and polluted.
We believe that if more of us feel safe to walk, cycle, scoot or use a mobility aid in our local communities, everyone benefits.
As fewer and fewer people opt to walk and cycle, we all pay the price.

We believe giving people more travel options when they leave their house will make Levenshulme and Burnage a better, healthier and happier community.

Speeding, pavement parking, lack of safe crossings and poor cycling infrastructure make walking and cycling unpleasant and sometimes even dangerous.

Get people to opt for other forms of travel when and if they can. If more of us feel safe to walk, cycle, scoot or use a mobility aid, everyone benefits. The air is cleaner, the streets are safer, the community is stronger.
Our story starts in 2018 with a call for bids which saw the Levenshulme Bee network established to trial an active neighbourhood. We’ve since seen new ‘green man’ crossings and the widening of pavements built at busy junctions, alongside campaigning for permanent school streets. Our work continues, and we’d love you to be part of it.
